Sandbanks & Prince Edward County, Ontario

Five swims around the Sandbanks.

Sandbanks sits on the largest baymouth barrier dune formation in the world, and the shallow water behind it is some of the warmest swimming on Lake Ontario.

Swimming in the County is a different thing from swimming the rest of Lake Ontario. The open lake is cold and deep and serious well into July; here the water sits behind a wall of sand in shallow bays that warm up early, and you can wade out a long way before it climbs past your waist. That's the whole appeal — and the reason the lot at Outlet fills by mid-morning on a hot Saturday.

These five are arranged the way you'd actually use a weekend. The first three are the beaches inside Sandbanks Provincial Park, each with its own temperament: one broad and busy, one small and warm, one long and half-wild. The last two are where people go when the park hangs the full sign — a town beach you can walk to a coffee from, and a quiet sandbar twenty minutes west that most visitors never find. The park sells its day passes by reservation now, and on the hot weekends they're gone early, so book ahead or come for the back half of the afternoon. The long arc of fine sand on the Lake Ontario side, and the beach most people mean when they say Sandbanks. The bottom shelves out so gently you can wade a long way before it reaches your waist, which is exactly why the lot fills first. Come early, or come for the evening light.

On the West Lake side, smaller and calmer and a few degrees warmer than the open lake — the one to pick with small kids. Shallow a long way out, the dunes rising behind you, and next to no surf.

The long, half-wild beach at the foot of the big dunes, down past the old Lakeshore Lodge. Fewer facilities than Outlet and far more room — walk west along the sand and the crowd thins to almost no one. It's open water, so read the wind before you swim out.

The town swim, right on the lake at the edge of Wellington. A short curve of sand where you can cool off and then walk five minutes to a coffee or a glass of County wine — not wild, but the most convenient water for miles.

A low sandbar twenty minutes west of the park, North Bay on one side and Lake Ontario on the other, warm and shallow on both. This is where locals go when Sandbanks closes its gates for the day — plainer, smaller, and usually quiet even in the heat of July.
